Types of Child Restraint Systems

  • Forward-Facing Systems: Oriented towards the direction of travel, equipped with a harness to restrict forward movement during impact.

  • Rear-Facing Systems: Positioned opposite the direction of travel, enhancing safety for younger children by distributing crash forces across the child’s back.

  • Infant Systems: Designed specifically for newborns, featuring a reclined seat back suitable for hand-held carrying and optimal support for infants.

  • Booster Seats: Elevate a child to align the vehicle’s seat belts properly with the child’s body structure. Available in backless and belt-positioning types.

Compliance Requirements

Child Restraint Systems must comply with specific regulations to be legally sold in the EU and UK:

  • UN Regulation 44: Products must have been manufactured or imported by August 31, 2023, to remain compliant. Such products can be sold until September 1, 2024.

  • UN Regulation 129: This regulation sets newer safety standards and is required for EU imports after June 30, 2023. It provides enhanced protection requirements compared to UN Regulation 44.

Compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations is mandatory for selling these products in regulated markets. Non-compliant products, such as many fabric restraint systems, are prohibited from sale. Vendors must submit relevant documentation and product images to verify compliance with the appropriate UN regulations.
