EU Energy Efficiency Labeling Regulations
The EU Energy Efficiency Labeling Regulations establish a framework for providing information on the energy efficiency and resource consumption of various products. These regulations apply across all EU member states, aiming to guide consumers in selecting efficient products and to encourage ongoing innovation in energy-efficient technologies.
Energy Labels: Products are rated on a scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). A+, A++, and A+++ ratings have been phased out for clarity. From 2021, the new scale applies to washing machines, dishwashers, electronic displays, refrigerators, and certain lighting products. Underscoring their move to a more understandable format, smartphones and tablets will adopt this scale from June 2025, and tumble dryers from July 2025.
Reseller and Supplier Obligations: Suppliers are responsible for ensuring products have accurate energy labels and accompanying product information sheets. Resellers must display these labels prominently, both in physical and online retail environments, to comply with the regulations.
Product Categories: Regulations target products affecting energy use during operation, such as tires, air conditioners, lighting, and household appliances. The laws do not apply to second-hand products unless imported from outside the EU.
Compliance: Sellers must adhere to these regulations to avoid having their products removed from EU marketplaces and to avoid penalties for non-compliance. It is crucial to stay informed about updates to the regulations, as they frequently evolve to include new product categories and standards.
