EU Textiles Regulation
The EU Textiles Regulation outlines essential requirements for textile products sold within the European Union. It addresses the naming of textile fibers, labeling obligations, and testing methods to substantiate label accuracy.
- Scope: Applies to products composed entirely of textile fibers, such as clothing, table mats, and even integrated textile components in other products. Examples include furniture and umbrellas containing a significant percentage of textile material.
- Responsibility: Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must ensure compliance. For non-EU-based manufacturers, the importer assumes responsibility for labeling.
- Labeling Requirements: Products must be accurately labeled with fiber composition, clearly and durably. Specific products require additional labeling provisions as detailed in Annex IV.
- Fibre Naming and Composition: Labels must reflect the textile fibers listed in Annex I. Terms like ‘100%’ or ‘pure’ are restricted to products entirely of one fiber type. Non-textile animal parts must be disclosed.
- Safety: Additional responsibilities fall under the General Product Safety Directive, ensuring consumer safety in the EU market.
