The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is an international initiative aimed at preventing “conflict diamonds” from entering the mainstream rough diamond market. Established in 2003, this certification scheme requires participating countries to ensure that diamond shipments are conflict-free and are accompanied by proper certification.

• Scope: The scheme is significant for diamond producers, exporters, and importers, providing a guarantee that their operations do not finance violence by rebel movements and their allies.
• Requirements: International standards mandate transparency and monitoring, where diamonds must be shipped in tamper-proof containers and have a government-validated Kimberley Process Certificate.
