Labeling of Footwear Components Directive
The Labeling of Footwear Components Directive (Directive 94/11/EC) mandates labeling requirements for footwear sold in the EU. It specifies how footwear must be labeled to inform consumers about the materials used in the main components: the upper, the lining and sock, and the outer sole. The regulation requires that labels use pictograms or written descriptions in the official language of the country where the product is sold. This applies to materials making up at least 80% of these parts. The responsibility for accurate labeling lies with the manufacturer or their authorized agent, or the first entity to make the product available for sale in the EU. Compliance with broader product safety regulations and national laws is also necessary.
