Low Voltage Directive (LVD)
Trutz Fries
The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) is a European Union directive (2014/35/EU) that establishes safety requirements for electrical equipment designed for use within specific voltage ranges - between 50 and 1000 volts for alternating current, and between 75 and 1500 volts for direct current. Its purpose is to ensure a high level of protection for health, safety of people, domestic animals, and property.
Obligations Under the LVD:
- Manufacturers: Must ensure products meet safety objectives, carry out conformity assessments, and affix the CE marking.
- Importers: Responsible for ensuring the manufacturer’s compliance and maintaining product conformity during storage and transport.
- Distributors: Required to verify the presence of the CE marking and compliance documentation.
Documentation: Manufacturers and importers must keep the technical documentation and declaration of conformity for ten years after the product is sold.
Non-compliance: Immediate corrective actions are required, along with notifying the relevant national authorities if the product poses a risk.
