Low Voltage Directive (LVD)
The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) is a European Union directive (2014/35/EU) that establishes safety requirements for electrical equipment designed for use within specific voltage ranges—between 50 and 1000 volts for alternating current, and between 75 and 1500 volts for direct current. Its purpose is to ensure a high level of protection for health, safety of people, domestic animals, and property.
Obligations Under the LVD:
- Manufacturers: Must ensure products meet safety objectives, carry out conformity assessments, and affix the CE marking.
- Importers: Responsible for ensuring the manufacturer’s compliance and maintaining product conformity during storage and transport.
- Distributors: Required to verify the presence of the CE marking and compliance documentation.
Documentation: Manufacturers and importers must keep the technical documentation and declaration of conformity for ten years after the product is sold.
Non-compliance: Immediate corrective actions are required, along with notifying the relevant national authorities if the product poses a risk.
