Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are a group of chemicals regulated by EU Regulation 2019/1021 due to their toxic nature and long-lasting presence in the environment. Commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” POPs can be found in household products such as electronics, textiles, paints, and specific furniture items with upholstered seating.
Main categories of POPs include:
- PBDEs: Found in electronic equipment, plastics, textiles, and furniture.
- SCCPs: Present in general consumer products.
- PFOAs and PFHxS: Associated with textiles, carpets, lubricants, and semiconductor materials.
- PCBs: Located in electronic equipment and oils.
- Pentachlorophenol (PCP): Used in treated wood and textiles.
- HBCDD: Found in insulation and packaging materials.
EU regulations prohibit the sale or use of products containing POPs above prescribed concentration limits. Compliance with these regulations is crucial for manufacturers and vendors to avoid legal penalties. Regular updates to the list of restricted substances necessitate frequent monitoring by stakeholders.
