Product IDs and Barcodes
Product IDs, or barcodes, are essential for listing products on Amazon. Each product requires its unique identifier, known as an external product ID, which must be provided during the listing process. These identifiers are crucial for verifying authenticity and are different from internal tracking identifiers like SKUs.
There are several international standards for these product IDs:
- UPC: Universal Product Code, mainly used in North America.
- EAN: European Article Number, including a country code prefix.
- GTIN: Global Trade Item Number, a standardized identifier used worldwide.
- JAN: Japanese Article Number, recognized by specific prefix codes.
- ISBN: International Standard Book Number, specifically for books.
Amazon also uses ASINs (Amazon Standard Identification Numbers) to track products. While GTINs are generally required, exemptions are possible for certain products or bundles that lack a GTIN due to the nature of their branding or production. In such cases, vendors can apply for a GTIN exemption, provided they meet specific criteria.
