Amazon Variations: Understand Parent and Child ASINs and Fix Broken Families
A shopper wants a green garden hose, 30 meters long. Your range is scattered across three Amazon detail pages, each offering a different selection of lengths. A competitor puts everything on one page and gets the order. The shopper came to water the garden. Catalog maintenance was never on the agenda.
The variation family determines which colors and sizes shoppers can choose on a detail page. It also affects the title and, in many categories, which reviews appear together. A broken family can cost you visibility and sales, even when every individual product is listed correctly.
Linking a child ASIN to a parent takes just three fields. Unfortunately, Amazon checks the entire listing, chooses which parent ASIN survives, and may take hours or until the next day to show the result. The three fields are the easy part.
This guide explains how variation families work, why repairs fail, and how sellers, vendors, and agencies can fix them in the right order.
What is an Amazon variation family?
A variation family contains one parent ASIN and several child ASINs. The children are the products shoppers can buy, such as a green hose in 15-meter and 30-meter lengths. The parent groups them together. It has no price or inventory and cannot be purchased. Keeping the family together is its entire job description.
The variation theme defines how the products differ, for example COLOR, SIZE, or COLOR/SIZE. The themes Amazon allows depend on the product type.
Our example is a garden hose from the fictional brand Wasserlauf, available in green and gray, in 15-, 30-, and 50-meter lengths. Choose “Healthy” below to see the family as it should look. The other scenarios illustrate the problems covered later in this guide.

Catalog and listing: What shoppers see and what you control
Troubleshooting starts with separating two layers. The catalog determines what appears on the detail page: the parent-child relationship, the available variants, and their color or size values. Amazon builds it from contributions by every supplier and seller associated with an ASIN. Yours is one contribution among them.
The listing contains the data you can edit. Three fields matter for the family relationship: the parent or child designation, the parent SKU, and the variation theme. You maintain them in Seller Central or Vendor Central. Field names can vary by category and editing screen.
These two layers can disagree. A child listing might still reference an old parent SKU even after Amazon has merged the families in the catalog. Shoppers see the catalog version, whatever your listing says.
Parent ASIN and parent SKU: Similar names, different jobs
The parent ASIN identifies the parent in Amazon’s catalog. The parent SKU identifies your listing for it. There are three common forms:
- Parent SKUs you created: These contain your product information and have child listings pointing to them.
- Parent SKUs Amazon created: These have a long string as their name, such as
3f2a9c1e-…, little content, and no child listings referencing them. - Older parent SKUs: Some use the ASIN itself as the SKU.
Sometimes there is no parent listing in your account at all. The family has a parent ASIN in the catalog, but you have no corresponding listing through which to manage its title and variation theme.
When planning a repair, remember: The parent SKU is your stable reference. The parent ASIN can change.
Each marketplace has its own family tree
The same child ASINs can belong to different parent ASINs on different marketplaces. Some countries may share a parent ASIN; others may each have their own. On another marketplace, the same range might be split across several families. One product line can acquire quite an extended family.
Check and repair families one marketplace at a time. Fixing the relationship on amazon.com does not automatically fix it on amazon.co.uk.
What differs between sellers and vendors?
The catalog logic is the same. The tools for maintaining the family differ:
| Seller | Vendor | |
|---|---|---|
| Edit a family | Variation tools in Seller Central or a category inventory file (flat file) | Vendor Central or a case with a variation spreadsheet |
| Remove a child ASIN | Seller Central or an inventory file | A case in Vendor Central or Amazon Support |
| Change locked fields such as brand, category, or product type | Amazon Support | Amazon Support |
If you are a vendor, decide which ASINs belong in the family before you start. Removing a variant requires a Vendor Central case or help from Amazon Support. When creating a parent listing, Vendor Central may also request details such as unit count, color, color mapping, and package dimensions. Have these ready.
Common problems with Amazon variation families
These issues can affect both sellers and vendors. You can explore many of them in the example above. Start with three questions: Does the family contain the right ASINs? Are the variation values correct? Is an old listing error blocking the repair?
One product line is split across several families
Some hoses belong to one family, others to another, and a few sit on their own. The shopper has to assemble your product range from the pieces. Causes include missing parent SKUs, families created at different times, and merges performed by Amazon.
Child ASINs belong to the wrong family or no family
A child listing points to the wrong parent SKU or has no parent SKU at all. Another possibility: The listing points to the right parent, but the catalog assigns the child ASIN elsewhere. A color or size then disappears from the family page even though the product still exists.
The parent listing is missing or there are several
Without a parent listing, you have no direct way to manage the family’s title and theme. Several parent listings can be just as confusing. Multiple parent SKUs in the same account may reference one parent ASIN, each with its own children and sometimes different product names. Amazon still displays only one title. Meanwhile, your team has to work out which parent SKU to use going forward.
Amazon displays the wrong family title
Your parent listing has the correct title. Amazon displays something else. The catalog title is assembled from all contributions to the parent ASIN, so another parent SKU or another supplier’s contribution can take precedence. A correct entry is not a publishing agreement.
In some families, even the child detail page displays the parent’s title instead of its own. Check the parent ASIN’s product title when a variant page shows the wrong one.
Empty parent ASINs and unexpected family members
Creating a parent listing for an existing family without linking the children can leave you with a parent ASIN that has no variants. The timeline below shows how this happens. Old parent ASINs left empty after a merge may disappear on their own.
A merge can also bring in products you never edited or no longer sell. They arrive with their old families. Some may not even have family attributes in your own listings because the relationship comes from the catalog. Amazon’s idea of a family reunion can be more inclusive than yours.
Locked fields: Brand, category, and product type
All children in a family should share the same product type. Aligning a mismatched type is not a routine edit, though: Product type, category, subcategory, and brand are locked after creation. Attempts to change them fail with error 101168. Amazon Support needs to make the correction.
Two children occupy the same combination (100899)
Two child ASINs have the same color and size. Amazon accepts one and rejects the other with error 100899 (“another child ASIN already has the same …”). Duplicate ASINs from the same supplier are often the cause. One must be removed from the family.
Missing or inconsistent variation values
If a child ASIN lacks its color or size value, Amazon cannot place it correctly in the variant selector. For shoes, footwear_size might be filled in while the size field needed for the variation is empty. Check that the editor contains all the values required by the variation theme.
Inconsistent labels are another common problem: “15 MM” beside “25 mm,” “45” in the listing but “45 (XS)” in the catalog, or “27” alongside “27 EU.” Then there is the same color spelled several ways. Gray remains gray, but the catalog gives it several identities.
Some labels come from other contributors, so your listing will not explain every catalog discrepancy. Compare the values in the editor with the detail page. Saving the correct value does not guarantee that Amazon will display it.
Older theme names such as SIZE_NAME and COLOR_NAME are not a problem by themselves. Amazon translates them to SIZE and COLOR. Still, use the current names when making changes.
Unrelated listing errors block the repair
The relationship is set up correctly, yet Amazon rejects the update. Check beyond the family fields. You change three fields; Amazon validates the entire listing. An old description that is too long can therefore block a new parent-child relationship. Your description has found a second way to be unhelpful.
| Error | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 90225 | Short description exceeds 300 characters | Rewrite the text |
| Duplicate brand | brand appears twice, for example with both English and German language tags | Replace the duplicates with one entry |
| 101172 | Brand is not allowed in this category | Contact Amazon Support |
| 101168 | Brand, category, or subcategory cannot be changed | Contact Amazon Support |
| 90000900 (warning) | Attribute no longer belongs to this product type | Check the current category template; contact Amazon Support if the field cannot be edited |
| 90004205 | Shoe-size age group conflicts with the age information | Check the age fields for conflicting values |
A wrong language tag hides a field (100720)
A language mismatch can trigger error 100720. For example, German text tagged en_GB on amazon.de can lead to the action “ATTRIBUTE_SUPPRESSED.” In plain English: Amazon hides the field. A child ASIN’s color or size can disappear this way.
This error does not block the family relationship. Correct it once the family is complete. Also check fields with a fixed list of allowed values. On the German marketplace, for instance, material may require “Kunststoff” rather than “Plastic.” A missing color mapping (color.standardized_values) affects the color filter.
Use the product type’s allowed values rather than translating them yourself. If error 100720 persists despite the correct language and an allowed value, ask Amazon Support to investigate.
What is not a variation error
A missing color does not always need a support case. On amazon.de, the selector hides colors that do not exist in the selected size. That is normal behavior. Choose a length below and watch which colors remain available.

Gray is unavailable in 50 m. The selector hides this color, but the family is still complete.
Error 8101 (“invalid product type”) can also appear temporarily on the parent just after linking and disappear within a day. Check again the following day before making another change. Different display groups within the same category do not necessarily prevent products from sharing a variation family either.
How to repair Amazon variation families manually
Take stock before changing anything. Linking products immediately can bring unwanted ASINs into the family or run into existing listing errors. Work through these steps in order:
-
Check the current setup on each marketplace
For each child: the catalog's parent ASIN, the listing's parent SKU, variation values, and all listing errors.
-
List every member of every affected family
Include products you do not plan to edit. They come along when families merge.
-
Clear the blockers
Shorten text and remove duplicate brand entries. Ask Amazon Support to correct locked fields.
-
Link the child listings
Make one type of change at a time so failures are easier to trace.
-
Check the result
Check listings after about ten minutes, Vendor Central within the hour, and the catalog and detail page the next day.
-
Clean up the remaining values
Review language tags, allowed values, color mapping, and consistent labels.
Patience is a step in the workflow here. Start another rebuild after an hour and your changes overlap. You then get the additional task of guessing which update Amazon is currently processing.
In Seller Central
Use Seller Central’s variation tools or the inventory file for your category. Enter the parent or child designation, the parent SKU, and the variation theme. Column names depend on the category template, so use the current version.
If two ASINs occupy the same color-size combination (100899), remove one from the family.
In Vendor Central
You can create new parent listings in Vendor Central. Complete the fields required for your product type. To have Amazon create or restructure a family, open a case and attach a variation spreadsheet.
Removing a child ASIN, deleting an extra parent, or changing brand and category also requires a case or help from Amazon Support.
Common repair traps
One trap takes time to reveal itself: The new parent listing exists, but the original family has not changed. Click through the timeline, then switch on “Do not link children.”

One product line, two families, and a standalone product. Neither family has a parent listing.
Amazon decides which parent ASIN survives. After a merge, the old parent ASIN may remain while the new one is deleted and the parent SKU is reassigned to the old ASIN. Keep the parent SKU as your reference throughout the repair.
A new parent listing may first receive a new, empty parent ASIN. This can happen even when the listing is meant for an existing family. Amazon merges the families only after the children are linked and may then delete the empty ASIN. The new number has enjoyed a brief career as paperwork.
Treat creating the parent and linking the children as parts of the same job. Without those links, the new parent ASIN stays empty. Check in the Seller Central or Vendor Central editor that each intended variant has the correct parent SKU and variation theme.
Check whether Amazon has already created a parent SKU. Look for the long string used as its name. If that SKU belongs to the family, link the child listings to it. You do not need another parent listing.
Existing families bring all their members into a merge. Decide in advance which products belong and what to do with the others. Vendors need a Vendor Central case or Amazon Support to remove unwanted members afterward.
A new parent listing must pass review first. Amazon allows up to 48 hours for this. Wait for the review, then link the children.
| Update | When it becomes visible |
|---|---|
| Parent SKU in the child listing | After about 10 minutes |
| Family in Vendor Central | Within the hour, one variant at a time |
| Review of a new parent listing | A few hours; Amazon allows up to 48 hours |
| Catalog family and surviving parent ASIN | Several hours to about one day |
| Product detail page | Several hours to about one day |
These are approximate timings; Amazon’s stated allowance for reviewing a new parent listing is up to 48 hours. Check the result the next day before declaring the repair a failure.
Monitor and repair variation families with AMALYTIX
Checking the current setup, finding blockers, and following up take most of the time. Even one product line can take several days: inspect listings, identify errors, resolve questions with Amazon, enter changes, and check again tomorrow. Editing the three fields is often the shortest part.
With Variation Groups in AMALYTIX, you save how the family should look: its ASINs and their values across up to four variation themes. The daily comparison with Amazon shows missing ASINs, unexpected additions, and mismatched values. The “Variation group mismatch” alert can notify your team by email, Slack, or MS Teams.
Vendors can create a Vendor Central case directly from the group, complete with a filled-in variation spreadsheet.
You can also start a repair in the chat. Ask the AMALYTIX AI Agent to check the families on a marketplace and explain incorrect relationships. Choose a family, and the agent reads its current setup and proposes a repair plan: which parent SKU to use, which children belong, and which blockers need fixing first.
The agent records the plan in a document, sends a test run to Amazon, and shows the response for each SKU.
Only valid changes reach the approval step. Nothing goes live until you approve. You decide on the text, values, and products included in the family. Later, you can ask the agent to compare the result with the plan and update the document. Your team can pick up the next day with a clear record of what worked and what is still pending.
The agent flags steps that require Amazon Support. It leaves brand, category, and product type unchanged. Removing a child ASIN from a vendor family still requires a Vendor Central case or support assistance.
Check the family again now.

Ask the chat to check the catalog again tomorrow.
Save your families as Variation Groups and let AMALYTIX check every day whether Amazon still shows them correctly. If a variant goes missing, you get an alert. Start your free trial
Conclusion
Look for variation problems in both the family structure and the listing. Wrong relationships, missing parent listings, and duplicate combinations explain what went wrong on the detail page. Old listing errors often explain why your repair will not go through.
Check the current setup, clear the blockers, and then link the children. Review the result the next day before cleaning up the remaining values. Keep the parent SKU stable; Amazon decides what happens to the parent ASIN. Start with one product line on one marketplace and complete the process before tackling the rest.
The goal is a shopper who finds the green 30-meter hose on one page. Their interest in the surviving parent ASIN should remain reassuringly close to zero.
Frequently asked questions about Amazon variations
Can I remove a child ASIN from a variation family?
Sellers can use Seller Central’s variation tools or an inventory file. Vendors need to open a case in Vendor Central or contact Amazon Support.
Why does Amazon hide some colors in my family?
Often, those colors are unavailable in the selected size. Check the available combinations first. If an existing combination is genuinely missing, investigate the catalog and listing relationship.
Can I choose the parent ASIN myself?
Amazon decides which parent ASIN remains after a merge. Use the parent SKU stored in your listing as the reference for your work.
How long does a variation change take to appear?
Allow about ten minutes for the relationship to appear in the listing and up to an hour in Vendor Central. The catalog and detail page may take several hours to about one day. Amazon allows up to 48 hours to review a new parent listing.
Do I need a separate parent SKU for each marketplace?
What matters is the relationship on each marketplace. Check the parent SKU and child ASINs separately for each one. A different parent ASIN does not, by itself, mean you need to create a new SKU.
Why does Amazon reject the relationship when I only change three fields?
Amazon validates the entire listing. An old description that is too long, a duplicate brand entry, or an attempted change to a locked field can block the relationship update too. Check the errors in the Seller Central or Vendor Central editor. For inventory-file uploads, read the processing report.
Can I align brand, category, or product type across a family?
These fields are locked after creation. Your own attempts to change them fail with error 101168. Ask Amazon Support to make the correction.
What is a parent SKU with a long string as its name?
Amazon created these parent SKUs. If one belongs to your family, you can link the children to it rather than creating another parent listing.
Which variation theme should I use?
Choose a theme allowed for the product type and use its current name, such as SIZE rather than SIZE_NAME. The category template or product type definition lists the permitted themes.
